'Tis the Season for Giving... Locally
Here's Patch's guide to local holiday shopping for everyone in your family.
Everyone dreads the perennial holiday shopping for your loved ones. But it doesn't have to require driving to huge shopping malls to purchase all your gifts at once. Redwood City has several stores that will satisfy everyone, even the pickiest ones of the family.
"We encourage our community to shop downtown and in local stores," said Public Communications Manager of Redwood City, Malcolm Smith. "In tough economic times, keeping the money local is very important for tax revenues and to support local businesses."
For Dad: a pair of FiveFinger shoes or a headlamp
1305 El Camino Real, (650) 363-2033
Redwood Trading Post has plenty of gift options, including camping gear, knives, socks, slippers, flashlights, wallets and hats.
"A real popular item this year has been the Vibrim FiveFinger Shoes, which are like gloves for feet," said co-owner Randy Weber. "The Gorillapod bendable tripods are also good gift items."
In addition, the store carries several Surefire flashlights and headlamps, which can make for great stocking stuffers.
For Mom: a scarf or Ikebanna vase
2210 Broadway St., (650) 455-5144
Stuff on the Square sells a range of craft items, including scarves and jewelry.
"We have cashmere scarves for $15," said co-owner Regina Van Brunt. "We also have a vender who makes hand-knitted scarves and shawls, for which there will be specials this month."
The store also carries many stained glass Ikebanna vases, which are a great way to display fresh cut flowers.
For your sister: a metallic cuff or hanky pankys
At: Pickled
2652 Broadway St., (650) 299-0990
Pickled has a range of chic apparel and accessories for women, from faux leather jackets and cocktail dresses to jewelry and leggings.
"We have a good selection of jewelry, including fun cuffs that are in style right now," said Pickled employee Jacki Inglis. "My favorite stocking stuffers are hanky pankys, which are thong underwear. They're comfortable, inexpensive and cute."
While you're there, check out the colorful scarves and stylish clutches.
For your teenage brother: a printed t-shirt or motorcycle gloves
At: Motostrano
926 Broadway St., (650) 780-9306
Carrying a wide selection of motorcycle parts, accessories and gifts, Motostrano is a great place to find a gift for a biker or someone who is just into the scene.
"If they do ride, a nice thing to get is gloves," said Motostrano owner Joe Witherspoon. "They aren't too expensive, in the $50 to $150 price range. If they do a lot of riding or track riding I like to recommend a back protector."
For more general gifts, the store carries a selection of casual t-shirts from motorcycle brands as well as motorcycle entertainment videos.
For your little cousin: an age-appropriate puzzle or game
At: Jigsaw Java
846 Main St., 650-364-3634
Jigsaw Java is the perfect place to shop for children. It carries a wide selection of puzzles, accommodating every age and skill level.
"We have hundreds of puzzles, each with a different theme and shape, some with small pieces, and some with large pieces," said employee Thais Barrocas. "We also have other mind games, like rubric cubes, sudoku, crossword puzzles and scramble squares."
Also considering giving your family member a membership to the Puzzle-of-the-Month Club, where they will receive a new puzzle at their level each month.
